Steven Skybell, center, is one of five actors playing Shylock in Karin Coonrod’s production of “The Merchant of Venice.” Credit Sara Krulwich/The New York Times MONTCLAIR, N.J. — The first gathering of the Shylocks is a sobering sight, instantly pushing comedy into the borders of tragedy. This chilling vision occurs halfway through what has thus far been an unusually blithe production of Shakespeare’s “The Merchant of Venice,” directed by at the at Montclair State University. It is carnival time in Venice, and the air has been full of bright song and hedonistic yelps. But the music and the voices have turned harsh, and now Jew-baiting imprecations are fired like stones from slingshots. Five figures, identically dressed in gold-sashed robes, form a silent, protective huddle at the center of the stage. Then one of them releases a prolonged howl that rends the night and stills the revelry. Shylock, the most infamous moneylender in literature, has just discovered that his daughter has absconded with his ducats to elope with a mercenary Christian. The scream comes from the actress Lynda Gravatt, one of five performers portraying Shylock in the production of Shakespeare’s thorny comedy of love and law, which runs through Sunday as part of season of music, dance and theater works by women. The other Shylocks, who stand behind her, are of varied shape, age and ethnicity. Lynda Gravatt, far left, as Shylock, along with four men also playing the role. Credit Sara Krulwich/The New York Times Ms. Coonrod’s attempt to solve the problem of Shylock by multiplication is surprisingly effective. When I read about her “Merchant” — first staged last year in (with a mock trial conducted after one performance by Ruth Bader Ginsburg) — it sounded gimmicky. But this experimental director has a knack for transforming high concepts into accessible theater. So it proves with this two-hour “Merchant,” which moves across a bare stage with a light and giddy tread — until it doesn’t. The show begins with a prologue delivered (in Italian, with supertitles) by a commedia dell’arte-style clown in a codpiece (an antic Francesca Sarah Toich), who gleefully describes the transformative power of love. But there’s method in Ms. Coonrod’s midsummer madness. A strain of uneasiness soon emerges within the romantic entanglements, a mood beautifully reflected in Frank London’s multifaceted music, performed by an onstage sextet. Plot summary of Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice: A young Venetian, Bassanio, needs a loan of three thousand ducats so that he. Of course Shylock, in all his incarnations, sounds a disruptive note of discord. But even more than usual in “Merchant,” people who initially charm us turn sour. That includes the title character, Antonio (Toussaint Jeanlouis), who disastrously borrows money from Shylock, and the best friend he is trying to assist, Bassanio (Titus Tompkins). They and their sybaritic buddies are smug in their social insularity. Even the witty heiress Portia (Linda Powell), whose cross-dressing turn as a lawyer saves Antonio’s skin, starts to seem (to quote a friend of mine’s description of a socialite) like “a rich girl trying to be nice.” Ms. Coonrod doesn’t make the mistake of presenting her Shylock as holier than the rest. His hunger for vengeance has made him vicious. But you feel viscerally where that rancor comes from. And partly because much of the acting is without sharp psychological shading — and because people change character with their clothes — you start to think that any of those onstage could be transformed into Shylock. Or his rebellious daughter, Jessica (a very good Michelle Uranowitz). Or Portia or Antonio. There’s a harrowing moment toward the end when Shylock, having lost his case to extract a “pound of flesh” from Antonio, steps from the stage into the audience. The Venetians gather at the edge of the proscenium in a forbidding, exclusionary wall. It is frighteningly easy to imagine yourself on either side of that dangerous divide. A new bipartisan bill known as the Honest Ads Act is the first major attempt to regulate online platforms that sell ads with rules akin to those that apply to more traditional advertising on TV, radio and in print. The bill, introduced today by Democratic Senators Mark Warner and Amy Klobuchar, with a bipartisan boost from Republican Senator John McCain, imposes regulations on social platforms, websites, ad networks and other online entities with more than 50 million unique users per month. As the bill’s: Russia attempted to influence the 2016 presidential election by buying and placing political ads on platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Google. The content and purchaser(s) of those online advertisements are a mystery to the public because of outdated laws that have failed to keep up with evolving technology. The Honest Ads Act would prevent foreign actors from influencing our elections by ensuring that political ads sold online are covered by the same rules as ads sold on TV, radio, and satellite. Disclosures for ad financing would apply to any entity that purchases more than $500 in ads cumulatively across a platform, a fairly low threshold for disclosure that speaks to the potency of even small ad buys on platforms like Facebook. The bill would also place a “reasonable expectation” on social media companies to identify if the source of an ad buy is outside the U.S. “There will always be a case where things can fall through the cracks. What we’re trying to do here is start with a light touch,” Warner said. “We don’t want to slow down innovation on the internet, we don’t want to slow down technology.” As the top Democrat on the Senate Intel Committee, Warner has had a front row seat to the revelations around Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. In their press conference announcing the bill, the senators noted that Google and Facebook command 85 percent of online political ads. “Who wouldn’t want to know if the ad appearing next to your story was being paid for by a foreign power?” Klobuchar asked. Its creators hope that the bill can make its way through Congress before primary season begins, fending off or at least complicating further attempts by the Russian government to seed divisive political ads online. Warner admitted that while the bill is a good start, it will still be difficult to identify accounts that are “misrepresenting themselves” to conceal where the money comes from. Calling the identity piece “much tougher,” Warner admits that he is “hoping that these platform companies come up with some ideas” for tracing and attributing political ad purchases. Klobuchar noted that tech companies may not be enthusiastic about facing increased regulation, but they have become increasingly cooperative after their initial reticence to admit fault. “Now the online companies, we’re working with them,” Klobuchar said. “I’m not going to tell you they support this bill right now. They have to realize that the world has changed, they have been selling ads and making money off of this system.” Even as they skewered for being “dismissive” early on and for essentially copying Facebook’s homework in its report to Congress a few weeks ago, the lawmakers appeared hopeful that cooperation would only improve as the depth of Russian election interference becomes more widely understood. In spite of that increasing cooperation, the senators suggested that voluntary adherence to Congressional guidelines would be an uneven solution at best. “The problem is, it has to cover everyone — you can’t just have a few companies doing it voluntarily, it has to be in the laws,” Warner said. “These companies rely on the trust of users,” he added. “It’s in their own self-interest.” Facebook, Twitter and Google are expected to appear in an open hearing before the House and Senate’s intelligence committees on November 1. Facebook and Twitter confirmed this week that they will not be sending high-profile executives to the hearings, instead opting to be represented by their general counsels. “I think that they got the message,” Warner said. “I think the real proof in the pudding will be ‘come to the hearing on November 1.’ “ Featured Image: / UNDER A LICENSE. She frequently dances around and gives cute looks, but will cause trouble. Hazel, the smallest quint, is both the 'fiery redhead' and the 'sweetest quint'. While innocent, a cuddler, and perfectly happy in her own world, she has a temper and can definitely 'pitch a fit'. Riley is a 'Daddy's girl' and the 'cutest little troublemaker'. She's most like Adam in personality. She demands attention, has no fear, is smart, confident, and bossy. While she antagonizes and picks on all her sisters, she has a particularly noticeable rivalry with Olivia. Parker, the last born, yet the tallest quint, is the leader and 'spokeswoman' of the quintuplets. She's often the one to show her sisters the 'right way' of doing something. She's the most talkative and quickest to say 'no'. She's also the sporty one and called the 'pooper spreader' by Danielle, often creating a large mess. Health [ ] Adam and Danielle have struggled with, ultimately becoming pregnant both times. During their first infertility journey, infertility was attributed to Adam’s testosterone levels, sperm count, and sperm motility being low; and to Danielle's irregular. Adam was placed on, which helped his sperm counts, but his sperm motility remained low. Danielle was also placed on Clomid to help her produce eggs and ovulate regularly. They went through 5 cycles (5 months) of intrauterine insemination on Clomid before discussing as an option. Instead of in vitro fertilization, they opted to switch Danielle to and attempted intrauterine insemination again, ultimately becoming pregnant with Blayke. During their second journey of infertility, Adam's testosterone levels, sperm count, and sperm motility were considered normal, thus, no infertility treatment were necessary for Adam. However, Danielle was placed back on Femara to help with egg production and ovulation. On the fourth cycle of intrauterine insemination, Danielle became pregnant with the quintuplets. The quintuplets were born prematurely, at 28 weeks, and spent several months in the NICU. Ava was the last quintuplet to be released from the NICU due to a series of acid-reflux episodes. She went home on July 6, 2015. Shortly after birth, a heart murmur was detected in all five girls, which was treated with medication. Hazel's eye condition, congenital, has been chronicled through the series. The condition causes Hazel to have uncontrolled eye movements and hold her head at unusual angles to compensate for her lack of clear vision. In 2016, Hazel underwent eye surgery in an attempt to improve her condition. In 2017, Hazel was diagnosed as having an astigmatism in her left eye, which may ultimately be responsible for it occasionally turn in as a result of being underdeveloped. She was prescribed glasses to help with her left eye far-sightedness with the hope that her vision will improve as her eye develops. Adam has opened up, both privately and publicly, about his struggle with. While it was a process to reach a point of acceptance, Adam has now accepted professional help for his sake, and the sake of his family and relationship with Danielle.
